NewScareware
Legacy Lore

This page contains many lore elements that are not considered part of the new, official lore. It's very unlikely that it will still be considered canon for new lore, but will maintain relevance in old lore.

Scareware are a species of Corruption.

Databrawl Battle Zone[]

In the Battle version of Databrawl, Scareware is one of the several characters obtained from a Special Token as a Corruption.

Stats[]

In the Battle Zone, Scareware has 130HP. They also have a walkspeed of 24 studs per second.

Weapons/Abilities[]

Scare Spear - A weapon similar to a normal Spear, though unlike the regular Spear, the Scare Spear deals 36-40 points of damage (+4 to enemies affected by Scream). The weapon has a cooldown of 1.4 seconds and is categorized as a "Thrusting Melee" weapon.

Shadowfy - A move which provides (at maximum) 10 seconds of near-invisibility. The move can be cancelled while active at any time (via unequipping it or clicking the screen again after activating it), and while not in use, it can be recharged. If the move is active for a long enough period of time whereas its timer counter is allowed to hit zero, the Scareware using the move must wait for the move to fully recharge before they can use it again. When using this move, the glow that Scareware produce is still faintly visible on the ground.

Scream - A move which slows and disarms all nearby enemies, gives them a 0.15 jump debuff, and makes them take four more damage from the Scare Spear. This debuff lasts for 1.25 seconds. The move has an effect radius of 20 studs and a cooldown of 15 seconds. Additionally, the move has a duration of 1 second, whereas the Scareware using the move will do the screaming action and be unable to perform any other moves until the single second is over.

Real World Counterpart[]

Scareware is a term for a malware that scares and manipulates users into buying harmful programs like ransomware or fake antiviruses. These malware use many different tactics, such as fake ads and pop-ups. Additionally, some scareware simply scare the user through jumpscares and pranks without actually causing any harm to the computer. Examples of specific scareware include SpySheriff, NightMare, and WinFixer.

Alternate Types[]

There are alternate types of Scareware, with the default type being the "mascot" of the species:

More Facts[]

  • The standard Scareware's design and model were both updated on September 28, 2022.
  • Scareware's "mouth" is actually an eye, as seen in the face it makes when it holds a weapon or a Program Heart.
  • In Databrawl Roleplay, Scareware's "Shadowfy" move only makes it translucent rather than fully transparent like in battle mode.
  • Scareware's main weapon, the Scare Spear, has the appearance of a Virus Spear, which is more rounded compared to a Malware Spear.
  • A long time ago, the Scare Spear weapon was once called "Scear" (a portmanteau of "Scare" and "Spear"). It was renamed to "Scare Spear" around December 2018.
  • Before their removal, Ghostgrams were unaffected by Scareware screams in Databrawl's Battle Zone, due to being equivalent.
  • Hardware are also unaffected by Scareware screams in Databrawl's Battle Zone.
  • Scareware was one of the first fanmade characters to be added to Databrawl Roleplay, along with Hardware and Ransomware. This makes it one of the oldest Databrawl Roleplay Contributor-made characters.
  • Scareware's scream and Scareware Beast's roar are both from Void Termina, the final boss of Kirby Star Allies. The Scareware scream is from the third phase (When it takes off to the Spacial Skies) and the Beast's roar is from its first phase (after it is formed).
  • Scareware makes a sound when it uses Shadowfy. The sound comes from Minecraft’s cave ambiences, and the name of the file being cave12.ogg. It will play a lower toned version of it when it transforms back opaque.
  • Scareware are known for joining Malware armies.
  • Scareware's current design was decided through a poll, with one design being made by DuncanDunclub and the other by Xtriel. Ultimately, Xtriel's design won the poll, though it was tweaked heavily from its design in the poll itself.
    • Before this poll, Scareware had two scrapped redesigns, one of which was repurposed into a character called REDROOM, and another which was more based off of what Scareware does in real life.
  • During the 2018 Halloween Event and the "Anything and Everything Update", a brawler version of Scareware was added called "Scareware Beast". This character had 250 HP, "Deadly Claws" that did 35-40 damage, Scareware's "Shadowfy" move, and a renamed "Scream" move called "Roar".
  • During the 2023 Jokebrawl Dontplay event, a version of Scareware called "Alpha Scareware" was made playable. However, this version is not the actual alpha version of Scareware, as the actual alpha version was made by someone who no longer wants to be associated with Databrawl. Instead, the one seen ingame is a version made by cryebral showing what the current version of Scareware would hypothetically look like had it been made during Databrawl's "alpha" phase.
  • Unlike Spyware, Scareware does not receive a slight increase in speed when cloaking.
  • Before June 30, 2024, Scareware's Scream move stunned and disarmed all opponents near them.
