Real World Counterpart[]

In real life, Storm Worm is a backdoor trojan that affects computers using Microsoft operating systems. On January 19, 2007, it began attacking thousands of computers in Europe and the United States using an e-mail message with a subject line about a recent weather disaster in Europe. It spreads through emails often containing headlines of an attention-grabbing nature. When an attachment is opened, the malware installs the wincom32 service and injects a payload. The compromised machine becomes merged into a botnet. This botnet had no centralized control, making it more difficult to take down. While the true extent of this botnet is unknown, estimates of the size of the Storm Worm's botnet ranged from 1 to 10 million computers. The Storm Worm was also known to install rootkits on computers.
